Canton's Meryl Davis, Charlie White favorites for gold at U.S. championships

By Jo-Ann Barna

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It seems so long ago, but it was only last February.

The Olympic m
edals had been awarded, and there were just the six of them on the ice -- gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, silver medalists Charlie White and Meryl Davis of the United States, and the coaches of both teams, Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, all of Canton's Arctic Figure Skating Club.

It was a groundbreaking moment: For the first time since ice dance became an Olympic sport in 1976, teams from North America finished 1-2. For White, the results affirmed what had been building since 2005, when Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto were the first Americans in 30 years to win the silver medal at the world championships before becoming the first U.S. Olympic silver medalists in 2006.

"Everything we put into it -- all of the emotions -- and we were all right there, together," White said of the Canton group hug at the Vancouver Games. "It was almost like a nice sort of final section to the story of the Olympics."
