Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the Olympic and World Championship silver medalists in ice dancing for 2010, have fallen to second place in the initial icenetwork.com World Figure Skating Rankings for the opening of the 2010-11 season. Davis and White, who live in Ann Arbor and train in Canton, were overtaken by the duo that beat them in both events, Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

The battle between the teams, who are friends and share coaches, only increases a rivalry that may well persist until the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Russia, when both duos will be near the end of the prime years of their careers. Virtue and Moir also live in Metro Detroit, when they are in training in Canton.

Davis and White had led Virtue and Moir by a scant 6.5 points at the end of last season.

A third local pair, Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates, who like Davis and White are students at the University of Michigan, moved from 13th to ninth in the rankings.

Jeremy Abbott, who trains in Bloomfield Hills, remained fifth in the rankings among the men.
